Kitchen Window
10/31/2003 9:25 PM

I replaced the window in my kitchen sometime in the summer of 2003. Only now, at the end of October, have I finished the project.

The previous window was an out-of-sorts crank-style. The top half didn't open at all, while the bottom half opened outwards about 6" and had no screen.  It was not very energy efficient and the crank was all but completely stripped.

The new window is a double hung vinyl Argon gas high-E sort of thing. The sashes even fold down for "easy cleaning".  It rarely occurs to me to clean windows, though.

The first day was spent removing the old window, which required many tools and lots of destruction. It was not obvious, after the old one was removed, how the new one was going to fit, so we covered the gaping hole and went to sleep. The next day I started adding wood to the rough opening to better fit the new window and, eventually, we got it in.  Then, four months later, I finished the interior trim work and painted it.

I've already removed the failing hand crank and the interior trim work here. Here you can see how the window worked: the top didn't open at all, and the bottom cranked out a little ways (there was no screen). I've pulled out even more woodwork to expose the window frame proper. I had to do quit the hack job to get even this far.

It's another nice day for random home renovation. Well, it looks like we worked something out. I had to add a few layers of wood underneath and to either side of the frame since this window was a bit smaller than the old one. But it seems to be square, level and plum. The sash goes smoothly up and down.

A month later or so I finally got around to starting to trim the inside of the enclosure. And a couple months after that (say, late October) I put the last bits of "trim" work together. And then I painted it all white so it looks at least somewhat intentional. At least it doesn't look retarded anymore.
