Burning Man '05
9/30/2005 4:45 PM

I have about two hundred pictures to share with the worldhood of the world. They've been organized into seven vague categories which I will upload and caption over time.

I've also included links to a handful of image galleries that a few of my friends took.  Now get to work and email me with any corrections (I can be kinda sloppy when I'm captioning two-hundred odd images).

  Robot Giraffe Walking

A 21 sec video of a walking robot giraffe.

Image Gallery: Highlights
Ten highlights from the event - these will get you started. Then check out the other 200 pictures to develop a better impression.
The Man, towering above. Andy and her parasol. Clockworks. Carrie, Sean and Andy, outside the Temple of Dreams. Matt (and Sarah) relaxing in my mutant boudoir. Colossus! Sean, stepping out of the orange room of seventy reflections. Me, at the bottom of the 24' climbable spire known as "Hypha". Burlesque escapees. The burning of the Temple.

Image Gallery: One - The Beginning
Departure from Minneapolis and some of the first day.
Me, not driving. Andy needs to make her bike go. We had run out of time back at home and just loaded our bikes and gear into the van along with the plan to take care of the manual labor out there. By and large, our plan worked fine. The eXXXit. Zell and Jesse dared the front door, I did not. The BRBC's most recent Minneapolis to San Fransisco transplant, Carrie (Rahna). Scott, surveying the landscape. He did an excellent job with the tie-down straps on our makeshift trailer.

Image Gallery: Two - The Art
It's an Art Festival, really.
This metal framed dome apparently had trouble during Monday's heavy winds. It looks like someone just drove this cherry-picker over it to keep it from blowing away. Poor dome. Ornate metal burn platform. The first night I saw this I thought it was made of wood and was puzzled by the fact that it wasn't being consumed. I didn't learn the truth until the next day when I saw that it was, in fact, made of metal. My bike! Both Andy and I wired UV CCFLs (cold cathode floursecent black-lights) to our bike frames and spray painted them with UV reactive paint. They were incredibly visible from a distance. I'm going to use CCFLs more in the future. A peak inside Center Camp. The Clocktower.

Image Gallery: Three - The Man
The Man rose above a three level structure. The first level was a maze, on the second you could observer and interact with those in the maze and on the third level you could (at night) phsyically rotate the Man.
Chuckles the perpetually out-of-order clown in a box. Me! Inside the card catalog. A room full of True Mirrors (and the artist currently at work fixing one of them).

Image Gallery: Four - Playa Art
Okay, this isn't art. This is us making dinner (rice in the pot, pre-packaged Indian food warming up on top. A giant train! Gina outside the Temple of Dreams. Gina, Sean, Carrie, and Me (noticing Sean's large shoes). Spider Car.

Image Gallery: Five - More Art
Art abounds; here's some more.
100' ladder to nowhere. Big rave camp domes. French Maid Brigade. One of them was nice enough to dust down my mutant boidoir. Another boxy mutant vehicle. Next year I hope to build one that people will remember for its impressiveness. This is complicated partially because I'm nearly two thousand miles away. Transporting anything impressive, I've found, will be quite expensive. Giant croquet.

Image Gallery: Six - Fun Things To Do
Center camp & stuff at night.
Apparently they were gathering for a big group picture. Back to Imagenode where they were performing a retro-Sensor RE:Engine. A self-luminating, interactive art installation. The only other one I can think of is the giant Lite Brite of which I didn't take a picture this year. Stilt walkers. Twin A making the noise go.

Image Gallery: Seven - Final Day
Some more art, the Temple burns down and we all race home.
Jason climbing the 24' Hypha. Andy, hiding in the rocks. We stopped at a rest area whereat we were advised to "Watch for Snakes and Scorpions". Despite much looking, we saw neither. Andy and her cute parasol. Andy, still hiding in the rocks. I couldn't decide which side of the rocks looked better, so I kept both pictures.
