Burning Man '05
9/30/2005 4:45 PM

I have about two hundred pictures to share with the worldhood of the world. They've been organized into seven vague categories which I will upload and caption over time.

I've also included links to a handful of image galleries that a few of my friends took.  Now get to work and email me with any corrections (I can be kinda sloppy when I'm captioning two-hundred odd images).

  Robot Giraffe Walking

A 21 sec video of a walking robot giraffe.

Image Gallery: Highlights
Ten highlights from the event - these will get you started. Then check out the other 200 pictures to develop a better impression.
The Man, towering above. Andy and her parasol. Clockworks. Carrie, Sean and Andy, outside the Temple of Dreams. Matt (and Sarah) relaxing in my mutant boudoir. Colossus! Sean, stepping out of the orange room of seventy reflections. Me, at the bottom of the 24' climbable spire known as "Hypha". Burlesque escapees. The burning of the Temple.

Image Gallery: One - The Beginning
Departure from Minneapolis and some of the first day.
The boudoir is getting quite beat up at this point. The dust ruffle, hood-comforter and tarp have been whipping around for dozens of hundreds of miles. If I had realized what all this wind would do, I wouldn't have assembled those pieces at home. I would have waiting until getting to the site to staple-gun everything together (especially considering I ended up re-stapling most of it, anyway). Salt flats are way flat. Still. Scott, surveying the landscape. He did an excellent job with the tie-down straps on our makeshift trailer. Our group, on the salt flats, from a somewhat higher viewpoint. Another quick stop somewhere boring for Taco Bell and gallons of water.

Image Gallery: Two - The Art
It's an Art Festival, really.
Cupcakes! These were the cutest. The Cutest. The Clocktower. The Cubatron, jr! Possibly the coolest thing on the playa. It's a three dimensional grid of ping ping balls, each of which can glow at any color and at any brightness. Many totally-awesome patterns are displayed on during the night (during the day it does nothing).<p>For more technical notes, check out their website: http://nw.com/nw/projects/cubatron Automatic Subconcious. I never did have the chance to check this place out.

Image Gallery: Three - The Man
The Man rose above a three level structure. The first level was a maze, on the second you could observer and interact with those in the maze and on the third level you could (at night) phsyically rotate the Man.
Looking six o'clock. At the end of the promenade is Center Camp (with Colossus towering in front of it). Lots of pastel plywood. A room full of True Mirrors (and the artist currently at work fixing one of them). Giant dreamcatcher. Looking in the direction of twelve o'clock. The purple head is "Dreamer"; behind him some ways is the Temple of Dreams (pink spires); behind that is a white pyramid that never, as far as I know, came to fruition (each time we walked by it it sported an "under construction" sign; then on Thursday they just deflated it).

Image Gallery: Four - Playa Art
Shoes! For whatever reason I don't have an aggregate picture of this piece; but the shoes ran around and around and created a small labyrinth. The center had a picture book of American soldiers. Andy outside the Temple of Dreams. Sarah! Surprised! Gina outside the Temple of Dreams. Me outside the Temple.

Image Gallery: Five - More Art
Art abounds; here's some more.
Big versions of those little magnet toys. "The Machine". I never got up in it and it never fully worked as intended. Apparently the top did rotate a bit (when people turned the turnstiles off to its sides); but the arms were never fully attached. The expanse of the playa (note dust devil on left side). Giant croquet. Thunderdome! It's kinda quiet during the day.

Image Gallery: Six - Fun Things To Do
Center camp & stuff at night.
The Man, late at night, with the super-awesome crane-cum-flower mutant towering next to it. (The Man is 40' tall and stands on top of a 25' platform.) Rhinos! Andy & Juggling Matt It was kinda not-so-exciting in the middle afternoon. A lady (perhaps the proprietor?) lay asleep on the floor. Woa. Too many lights!

Image Gallery: Seven - Final Day
Some more art, the Temple burns down and we all race home.
The front half of our neighbor's mutant vehicle. The hyper-amazing robotic walking giraffe. Check out the full-motion AVI on a couple pages up. A view of the Temple (et al) from atop the 24' Hypha. Matt (and Sarah) relaxing in the boudoir. Spongemonkey, exiting the orange room with seventy reflections.
