| | Don't Buy a McCulluch Generator Last August I bought the McCulluch 1800 Inverter generator (as mentioned here). I choose this one over the equivalent Honda because it was $350 cheaper. I now wish I had spent the extra money and got the much-lauded Honda.
I regret buying the McCulluch generator:
- It has always been hard to get running
after having sat for more than a few days.
- Draining the fuel and oil is
a messy, poorly designed activity. It would save time if I just dumped the fuel right onto the ground since that's where most of it ends up anyway. (And to be thorough I should roll around in the wasted fuel, too.)
- I can't find a fucking replacement spark plug. I went to the local hw store and they didn't have one. They pointed me to a small engine repair shop and they didn't have one either. A spark plug! Why is it hard to find a replacement spark plug?
- It's a lot noisier then the comparable Honda.
I wish I had bought a Honda.
Addendum (5/19/08): After going to five different stores (including Northern Tool, from which I originally bought the generator) I finally tracked down a suitable replacement spark plug. For anyone who is having the same problem, here's the answer: The LD Torch A7RTC spark plug (as specified in the McCulluch manual) can be replaced with an NGK CR7HSA (4549) (available at Napa Auto).
I put the new plug in the engine and with one pull of the starter cable the generator was running. Odd, considering the old plug looked fine. Let's just hope it continues to run.
