Everything's Damp
6/6/2005 10:20 PM

We drove a couple hours east to land owner by a group called Deepy Rooted.  We arrived Friday night (about two hours later than I had wanted to), pitched our tent and starting some serious hanging-out.

Saturday morning was very humid and it rained a little bit. Eventually we got awake, erected my icosahedron dome, set up the kitchen and made breakfast. Shortly thereafter, the rains started. And they didn't stop for about ten hours. Unfortunately, the land is already kinda swampy. The high water table couples with the intense rains turned everything into mud and puddles.

The dome withstood the weather beautifully. We had to shut the windows to keep the rain out and I didn't have a good hanging camping light, so it was kinda dark in there. But the cover didn't rip, it didn't blow off, the framework held just fine and it didn't pull out of the ground. I think it's now ready for the playa.

We had a tornado warning around 7p and a bit more rain, but by 8p the rains had quit and we enjoyed out potluck dinner. Then the fun began! We stoked up the flames and set Bryan's obelisk alight (amusing anecdote: the obelisk was place over the campfire, but it was so wide that the heat and flame just went up the center of it like a chimney. since we were to impatient to wait for it to catch fire, Bobby G climbed a 6' ladder next to it and poured some unusable biodiesel down its sides. it took to flame moments after that).

Because everything was damp, Andy and I left the campsite around 1a and drove home rather than try to sleep in damp sleeping bags (and possibly have to load out in Sunday's rain). We got home around 4:30a and were able to sleep nice and dry.

Our little campsite. Notice how everything is damp. My icosahedron with its 4 mil black-plastic rain covering. It weathered all of the weather! That's Aaron, inside the dome.
