The second picture shows the simple breadboard circuit. The PIC18F452 microcontroller is flashing each column of the image for 1 millisecond (so the entire 10 column images flashes 100 times each second). Each pin on portB controls one  | | Simple circuit | of the 8 LEDs. Very straightforward.
I think I might try doubling the number of LEDs to 16 (the 18F452 provides me with plenty of control pins to do this). I'm also interested in using a bunch of transistors to control brighter lights than just a single LED (like, perhaps, a small set of LED wired together).
