I have begun yet another new hobby: PIC Microcontroller programming. Once I got over the initial hurdle I have found it to be quite straightforward. Years of software development and a modicum of mechanical and electrical engineering may have gone a long way towards that.

Swordfish This is what I've been using, though I don't really like it.
PICC-18 Compiler PICC-18 Compiler (though I haven't really learned to use it, yet)
ePIC Programmer Hardware interface to programmer my PICs (this is what I used to use).
DIY K150 Programmer This is the programmer I use now (it's USB!).
Jameco Electronics Retailer of a variety of electronic components.
