Kitchen Renovation
10/28/2003 4:10 AM

So I decided, a couple days ago, that I was going to finally paint the kitchen walls.  And, as in all things, this evolved into something quite a bit more labor intensive.

North wall - white. South & east walls, also white (well, they're supposed to be; blame the lighting).

First coat of the upper half of the north wall. Long way to go, yet, but I feel confident that this red is going to work fine. Second coat on the entire north wall. Much better than the old white! Let's get this stuff out of the way and start painting! Yeah! Look at that paint. Now let's focus on the floor...

The floor was [ugly/dirty] linoleum glued to 1/8" plywood which was nailed to the original maple hardwood. My first thought was to just rip up the linoleum and replace it with self-adhesive checkboard tile. But I quickly discovered that the linoleum and the plywood were fused; so I would have to take up the plywood, as well. After spending four hours with a hammer, a screwdriver, a pliers and a short pry bar (that I pulled out of my truck's tirejack kit) I decided to go to the hardware store and buy a proper crowbar. I should have bought one of these years ago. It makes all the difference! But the greatest boon to my productivity were these wonderful helper gnomes. Imagine my surprise after being woken up in the middle of the night to the sounds of prying, tearing and sweeping! They were gone by morning and the only evidence that they'd ever been here was this strange marking left behind, imprinted into the floor for all time.
